Momtography™ LIVE is the 4 hour jumpstart DSLR photography class designed with moms in mind. Meet Beryl Young, your Northern, Virginia local instructor!

Beryl Young

Northern, Virginia

Hi! I’m Beryl, founder of Recapture Self and creator of the Momtography™ class! I’m a former elementary school teacher turned creative business owner who learned back in 2009 the power of picking up a camera and how it can shape and transform your outlook as a mom. I live in a small town in the Northern most part of Virginia with my husband, our spunky 7 year old daughter, and our animals – two cats and one dog (who sometimes thinks she’s a cat too!). Keep on scrolling to learn a bit more about me, how the Momtography™ class came to be, or check out my upcoming LIVE class dates and register for a class below!

my why

5 years ago I was sitting where you are right now. At a computer, looking for the perfect class that would teach me how to use my camera to take stunning images of my growing family. I was itching to get out of AUTO mode and learn to capture professional quality photos of my family on my own. After years of taking classes that left me underwhelmed, and reading forums and books that were overwhelming, I developed a class of my very own, Momtography™.

Family life is busy, and fast paced, and fleeting. I know moms want to not only beautifully capture their memories, but also do it in a way that allows them to be present with their loved ones too.

Momtography™ is the jumpstart experience I created to help moms not only love their photos, but love their life too!

3 fun facts

What’s unique about YOU? I’m so excited to find out in our afternoon together. Until then, this is ME!

I’m a personality test junkie and have been since middle school. My Myers Briggs type is INFJ – the rarest, most intuitive, yet oftentimes misunderstood type. I think my desire to dig deep into self-discovery and personality psychology (I was a Psych major in college) stems from spending most of my life not truly understanding myself. If you attend a future class with me, come prepared to not only learn about photography and your camera but to learn a little bit about yourself too!

My husband (I call him my Calmer) and I met when I was still in High School while working at our favorite store — Target! We used to joke that we should’ve had our wedding in a Target store, with a reception in the food court but that dream never came to be. However, you better believe that we do a weekly shopping trip there and we try to find and visit as many out of town stores as we can when on vacation or away from home. We used to have a goal to visit every Target in the US. But as they’ve grown as a company we’re not so sure that goal is a realistic one anymore!

I’ve lived with chronic illness since age 5 and I was the poster child for the National Arthritis Foundation Telethon when I was five years old. Even though chronic illness presents it’s share of challenges, I’ve never let it hold me back from big dreams. In fact I’ve been on a journey of trusting my body more these past few years, running my first 5k in 2014 and my first 10k in 2016. At the beginning of 2018 I’ll be running in my first half marathon. I’m nervous, excited, and ready to take on this new challenge!

my next class

MOMTOGRAPHY™ IS THE BEGINNER DSLR PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS DESIGNED WITH MOMS IN MIND.

Designed for the busy parent, grandparent, or family member on the go, this 4 hour jumpstart course will deliver the basics to get that camera out of AUTO mode and working for you in any situation.

During your 4 hour Momtography™ class we’ll cover the following topics:

  • Top 10 Tips for Taking Better Pictures of Kids
  • Basic Photo Composition Rules
  • Introduction to Exposure (why are my pictures from outside so bright and why are there so many shadows on faces?)
  • ISO (why are all my pictures from inside the house so dark and grainy?)
  • Shutter Speed (my baby is on the move and all of my photos are blurry!)
  • Aperture (how can I take pictures when my kitchen is such a mess?!)
  • Camera Settings
  • Basic Lens Overview
  • Backup, Printing, & Processing Overview

 YOUR REGISTRATION ALSO INCLUDES:

  • An afternoon away from the kids with the opportunity to meet and mingle with others who want to learn about their camera, just like you.
  • PDF quick guides of all course materials, notebook and pen so you’ll be able to recall what you’ve been taught long after Momtography™ is over.
  • Snacks and drinks to keep you energized and re-fueled for an afternoon of learning.
  • Access to a closed Facebook group after class is over to connect with other Momtography™ students and photo lovers so you’ll be able to keep in touch, share, learn and grow together as you continue practicing what you’ve learned.

Keep in mind: if you’re hoping to learn how to effectively use flash equipment to take photos at your cousin’s wedding next month, this might not be the class for you.

In 4 hours we only have time to touch on technical basics, and I personally take 99.9% of my own photos without flash. All that extra equipment is bulky, and requires time and patience to set up and use properly which isn’t always the best option when you’re a mom on the go.

Not to worry though, that tips and techniques shared during class will have you taking photos far more crisp, clear, bright, and beautiful than you imagined possible after 4 hours of learning!
